A Call to True Repentance – Matthew 3

Matthew 3:7-10

“But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.”

What Jumped Out

While baptizing, John saw the Pharisees and Sadducees coming toward him, and he spoke to them. He addressed them with conviction-based boldness. He confronted their need for repentance and exposed the false security they were leaning on. He corrected their confidence in Abraham versus their need to trust God’s promise and produce fruit that matched repentance. It is a strong, meaningful rebuke, and it carries instruction.

Why It Matters

Spiritual position does not automatically mean spiritual condition. John’s words warn us that lineage, reputation, and religious association do not replace repentance. God is looking for fruit, not excuses. He wants reality, not appearance.

How This Changes My Life

As a leader in the church, I can see how easy it is to slip into sin by judging people, showing favoritism, loving money, or manipulating people and situations. I do not ever want to hurt anyone. This reminds me to approach each day, each person, and each scenario with an open heart and open eyes, and to be quicker to listen, pray, and respond, Lord willing.

Prayer

Father, thank You for Your Holy Word. You provide instruction, correction, reproof, and so much more through it. May Your words always be at work within my heart, my mind, and my tongue, so that I may participate in the things of God by Your Spirit and according to Your pleasure, as You have provided them for our needs. Thank You for everything that is holy.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
