The Importance of the Gospel of Jesus Christ According to the Book of Philemon

Hallelujah. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

Don’t you love it when the Spirit of God comes into a place in such a powerful way? In a world that is often filled with turmoil, pressure, and uncertainty, there are moments when the presence of God settles over us like a blanket of peace.

In those moments, we are reminded that God is still in control. His presence is a demonstration of His power, His mercy, and His desire to draw near to His people.

It is also a reminder that this life is not about us. It is not about image, ego, or personal recognition. This is a matter of life and death.

And God says to us in His Word: Choose life.

In fact, God Himself is life. True life is found in Him, and He offers it as a gift — a perfect gift, a precious gift, a real gift.

But I believe God is calling His people to go to another level — individually and corporately. I believe the hour we are living in carries a sense of urgency.

My life was not always lived inside the church. I grew up in the world and learned the ways of the world. But one day I found myself at the end of myself.

On October 24th, 1995, I crawled into a church exhausted, broken, and empty. From the outside everything looked fine. I had a job, a home, and nice things. But inside there was no peace.

That day I encountered the grace of God, and God saved my life.

One of my favorite books of the Bible is the book of Philemon. Though it is small, it contains a powerful picture of the Gospel.

The apostle Paul wrote this letter while imprisoned in Rome. He wrote to a believer named Philemon, a man of faith who hosted a church in his home.

But Paul was writing about a man named Onesimus. Onesimus had been a slave who ran away after wronging Philemon.

Ironically, the name Onesimus means useful. Yet at that time he likely felt completely useless.

While running from his past, Onesimus encountered Paul. Through fellowship, teaching, and the power of the Gospel, his life was transformed.

Paul later wrote: “Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is useful both to you and to me.”

Paul then sent Onesimus back to Philemon, not as a slave, but as a brother.

In this we see a picture of the Gospel. Just as Paul interceded for Onesimus, Jesus Christ intercedes for us.

There are many people today who feel like Onesimus once did — lost, ashamed, or without purpose. But the Gospel restores lives.

God takes what the world calls useless and makes it useful again.

He rebuilds broken hearts. He restores identity. He gives purpose where there was despair.

This is the message we carry. The Gospel is not just information — it is power.

Scripture says the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.

Through the Gospel, lives are resurrected.

As believers, we carry this message. Sometimes it is as simple as telling someone, “Jesus loves you.”

God has filled us with His Spirit. He answers prayers and provides for us. If we believe this, we must allow the Gospel to flow through our lives.

God never throws people away.

The world may reject or disqualify us, but God restores. He takes those who feel useless and gives them purpose.

Just as Onesimus was restored, God restores lives today.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the mercy and grace found in Jesus Christ. Help us carry this message faithfully and share the hope of the Gospel with others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

What jumped out at me? Verse 13 – “So Moses cried out to the Lord, ‘Please, God, heal her!’” Why […]

What jumped out at me?

Verse 13 – “So Moses cried out to the Lord, ‘Please, God, heal her!’”

Why It Jumped Out?

After Miriam spoke against Moses because he had taken a Cushite wife, it was the very one she spoke against who made intercession for her. The one who had been wronged was the one who cried out to God on her behalf.

Of course Moses loved his sister, but this moment reveals something deeper about his heart and his relationship with God. Moses knew the Lord—not just as the One who speaks, but as the One who heals. He knew God as compassionate and able to restore. When Miriam was struck with leprosy, Moses did not pause to defend himself or remind anyone that he had been the one mistreated. Instead, he immediately turned toward God and cried out, “Please, God, heal her!”

That short prayer carries great weight. Moses was not concerned about vindication; he was concerned about mercy. Healing his sister was what mattered to him most in that moment.

This reminds me of Christ on the cross when He said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Even while suffering injustice, Jesus responded with mercy. And when He declared, “It is finished,” He showed the fullness of God’s redemptive love.

In many ways, Moses was living in that same spirit of intercession. He had been placed by God not only to communicate His words and His will to the people, but also to stand in the gap for them. Moses served both God and man. Even when he was the one spoken against, he still cried out for mercy.

How this changes my life

God reminds us that His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. Because of that, I realize that I should be quicker to listen and slower to speak. My desire is to please God not only with my actions but also with my words.

Seeing Moses respond this way challenges me. If he could intercede for someone who had spoken against him, then I should learn to forgive more readily, worry less about offenses, and not be so easily wounded by the words of others.

Moses’ example reminds me that a heart that truly knows God is a heart that moves toward mercy.

Prayer

God, thank You for Your Holy Word. Every word of Scripture is spirit and life, and it has the power to quicken our hearts toward righteousness.

Forgive me for every word I have spoken that did not please You. Cleanse my heart and help me to be quick to listen and slow to speak. Teach me to hold my tongue when I should and to respond with grace.

Thank You for healing us, restoring us, and continually reminding us of Your eternal truths. Your mercy is great, and I am grateful.

May Your will be done in my life.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

What jumped out at me? Verse 4-5: 4 Therefore, among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions […]

What jumped out at me?

Verse 4-5: 4 Therefore, among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring.5 All this is evidence that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering.

Verse 11: 11 With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith.

Why it Jumped Out

The church at Thessalonica had adapted to a positive stance in their suffering, which please Paul and seemingly God. Many modern churches are in simple challenges amongst each other and enjoy many commodities the world has to offer.

Through verse 11, I am reminded that it is God who makes us worthy of His calling. Anyone can try to fulfill the gifts described in Ephesian 4:11, but it is God who creates ministry and the minister.

I am reminded that Paul often defended his Apostleship in Christ who was called to preach the Gospel to the Gentiles. I appreciate his defensive position.

How this changes my life

I am reminded that when suffering God spoke to me that “I am His Minister.” Therefore, I did not create what God has done in my life, nor did I create those He healed and received. I am to follow His lead and not follow this carnal world.

Prayer

Father, thank you for your Word and Holy Spirit who guides us into righteousness. You are the potter and I am the clay.

In Jesus Name, Amen.

What jumped out at me? Verses 14 14 When the king heard this, he was greatly distressed; he was determined to rescue […]

What jumped out at me?

Verses 14 14 When the king heard this, he was greatly distressed; he was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until sundown to save him.

Why it Jumped out

The king reminded me of our Father because the king was well aware of their political jousting, jockeying, slander and setup, and he was greatly distressed. The king’s distress reminds me of Eph. 4:30, And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Darius and Daniel’s bond had already been sealed.

The king loved Daniel and desired to rescue, save and deliver him. But,he could not go against his words.

Because of Daniel’s faith and true relationship with the king, the envious characters in this account attempted to use principles that were in place against Daniel and the king. The king was faithful to his word and God delivered Daniel. The characters got their unprosperous rewards.

How this changes my life

Sometimes people you love try to use your faith against you, to test your faith if you will. To prompt you to move against God so they can accuse you. I am reminded that being faithful to God is worth suffering through any loss of relationship that I have to encounter. When accused, the Words of God become our defense. If suffering results, trust in God and He will see me through. And, I am not to manipulate things to work towards others’ demise to have my way in circumstances.

Prayer

Lord, forgive me Father for my sins. May I not be a weapon formed against others, unless you would have me to be, and may no weapon formed against me prosper. Help me to walk purely in my life. Lord,

Always watch over us, and coordinate activities using our lives to accomplish your Will through us.

In Jesus Name, Amen.

Romans 5(2) What jumped out at me? Verse 10a “ 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through […]

Romans 5(2)

What jumped out at me?

Verse 10a “ 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!

Why It Jumped Out?

As a Christian, I am often tempted to wish that Adam had done a different thing. I usually fail to realize that had I been in Adam’s shoes, I too would have failed humanity.

So, verse 10a informs that we were God’s enemies. That means He was not pleased with mankind, including me, and unfortunately, I wasn’t pleased either, so I searched for alternatives and accepted sin in my life.

Jesus, who knew no sin came to defeat the works of the devil and was contrary to my way of thinking. His ways and thoughts are Higher than mine. So, I believe that during those “sinful” days, I too would not have liked Jesus. I would not have recognized Him as Love but would have seen Him trying to change a stubborn, arrogant, unruly and carnal man.

Therefore, I am appreciating that while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to Him through Jesus’ giving of His life in order to please the Father, who is love. Then, I would not have done that for Him, but He did it for me.

He has taught me to die unto myself, and taught me to love Him. We love Him, because He first loved us, according to 1 John 4:19.

He perfectly demonstrated that we too can love our enemies as He has instructed.

How this changes my life

I am more dependent upon Him than I ever realized, and I am grateful. He is far deeper, wider, higher, stronger, more caring and loving than I can perceive. So, I should be able to trust Him with everything, especially since He saves lives, including my own.

Prayer

God, Thank You. I am glad that you are far greater, closer, aware and active than I can imagine. I am thankful that you are Lord and are faithful to your Words. Thank you for your precious Son who gave His life to reconcile us that we get to receive your Presence and Your Love. Thank you for many blessings too.

In Jesus Name, Amen.

Acts 2 What jumped out at me? Verses 7-10 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming […]

Acts 2

What jumped out at me?

Verses 7-10 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. 9 And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

Why It Jumped Out?

While baptizing, John saw the Pharisees coming towards him. John spoke to them! He addressed them with a conviction-based boldness and insinuated their immediate need for salvation, their ignorance to it and instruction to continually repent. What a strong, meaningful rebuke! Then, John offered correction about their confidence Abraham versus them needing confidence in God’s promise to Abraham.

How this changes my life

As a leader in the church, I can see that it is easy to slip into sin by judging people, having favoritism, loving money, manipulating people and things. I don’t ever want to hurt anyone. So, this reminds me to approach each day, person and scenario with an open heart, open eyes and to be quicker to listen, pray and respond, Lord Willing.

Prayer

Father, thank you for your Holy Word. You provide instruction, correction, reproof and so much more to us through it. May Your words always be at work within my heart, my mind, my tongue, so that I may participate in the things of God by Your Spirit and according to Your pleasure, as You have provided them for our needs. Thank you for everything that is Holy,

In Jesus Name, Amen.

What jumped out at me?

Verse 3-4 & v.18 3 Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness. There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns. 4 The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls. She held a golden cup in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries.

18 The woman you saw is the great city that rules over the kings of the earth.”

Why It Jumped Out?

The Scripture frightened me.

John described how God showed Him this. At this point, I can relate to some degree, I think.

While filthy and corrupt on the inside, she appeared to be fine in taste, possessive and materially minded, but filthy, just the same.

How this changes my life

I am reminded to not pursue riches, and that everything that looks like gold is not worth pursuing or even looking at. Instead of looking at man, material possessions and the influence that this world has to offer, I am to focus on good things, to keep my eye on the invisible things, the heavenly things, God, as I submit myself in order that I may please Him. While we need some material possessions, adornment, malfeasance, opulence, greed, adulteries, idolatry, lust and more evils are not from God.

Prayer

God, Thank You for the fear of the Lord. May it always exist in me and may it bring wisdom here. Thank you for this clear example that compares to scenarios that we see in our lives during this current time. May temptation never be able to influence me to do evil. Continue to strengthen me and fill me so that I may share the Words of God, with the message of the Cross and the goodness of God, everywhere you would have me to share. Thank you Father,

In Jesus Name, Amen.

What jumped out at me?

Verse 6-14 – 6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 9 As it is written:

“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor;
    their righteousness endures forever.”[a]

10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 13 Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14 And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. 15 Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

Why It Jumped Out?

I appreciate this pericope as it clearly influences and addresses the matters of the heart as they relate to sowing and its’ purposes. Paul’s encouragement removes the elements of religious, mondain burdensome giving and provide instruction about giving freely, which blesses others and more importantly, pleases God. The benefits of giving persuade believers to intentionally view and give with a heart that pleases God and prompts Him to move on their behalf.

How this changes my life

It reminds me the importance of scattering gifts to the poor, and that God responds with righteousness. This helps to update my thinking so I am not simply going through motions but that God sees every act and sometimes brings us to those instances. I desire to give by faith, love and hope, that God enriches the life of the recipient of my gift(s) and that He is pleased with my disposition, my heart, my spirit and my posture towards God and fellowman.

Prayer

God, Thank You for this strong impression that thy Word has made upon my heart today. I am grateful that you are mindful of man. Thank you for being mindful of me. I am grateful for the way you have taken care of us all. Truy, you are a Way-maker. I pray that I am pleasing to you, when I give. Lord, let me not overlook or misjudge scenarios or people but help me to sow according to thy Word. I would like to give more to the poor Lord. Help me. Thank you, God.

In Jesus Name, Amen.
